As Se en at ITS A 2 01 3! Why Light Roadways? Among the chief reasons for installing roadway lighting, according to guidance from the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES, 2000), is the potential for lighting to contribute to improved nighttime safety. And the logic that roadway lighting provides drivers with improved visibility and in turn greater distance and longer time to respond to potential hazards along the roadway is largely sound. Multiple studies of roadway lighting (IES, 1989; CIE, 1992) have found links between the presence of roadway lighting and fewer nighttime crashes, leading to estimates that lighting contributes to a 30% reduction in the night-today crash ratio. Figures similar to this 30% value are often used by transportation agencies to justify installation of roadway lighting.

Estimating the Safety Benefits of Red Light Cameras at Signalized Intersections in Urban Areas Case Study: The City of Virginia Beach
The Highway Safety Manual [HSM, 2010] recommends safety evaluations be performed before implementing any roadway treatment to predict the expected safety consequences. Safety consequences can be measured using crash prediction models, Crash Modification Factor (CMFs), or both. This paper develops a CMF to show the expected impact of red-light cameras (RLCs) on safety at signalized intersections...
متن کاملBenefits of Intelligent Headlamp Technologies to Pedestrian Safety at Roundabouts
A two-part study of the influence of vehicle headlamps and roadway lighting on the ability of drivers to see pedestrians along crosswalks in roundabout intersections was conducted. In the first part of the study, the photometric performance of vehicle headlamp systems including conventional halogen and high intensity discharge (HID) low-beam headlamp systems and intelligent vehicle headlamp sys...
متن کاملLandscaping of highway medians and roadway safety at unsignalized intersections.
Well-planted and maintained landscaping can help reduce driving stress, provide better visual quality, and decrease over speeding, thus improving roadway safety. Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Standard Index (SI-546) is one of the more demanding standards in the U.S. for landscaping design criteria at highway medians near intersections. The purposes of this study were to (1) empiri...
متن کاملGeometric Categories as Intersection Safety Evaluation Tools
A number of operational and geometric factors impact the safety of at-grade intersections. Examples include the type of traffic control, the existence of left-turn lanes, and adequate sight distance. Determining whether an intersection of particular geometric design has unusual crash patterns could help identify those locations that need additional safety evaluation. During the last two years, ...
متن کاملTemporal and spatial analyses of rear-end crashes at signalized intersections.
In this study, the generalized estimating equations with the negative binomial link function were used to model rear-end crash frequencies at signalized intersections to account for the temporal or spatial correlation among the data. The longitudinal data for 208 signalized intersections over 3 years and the spatially correlated data for 476 signalized intersections which are located along diff...
